A Guide To Birthstones: A Gem For Every Month

Birthstones are gemstones that are connected to specific birth months, adding a touch of charm to the world of jewelry. A diverse selection of birthstone pieces awaits, ranging from timelessย birthstone ringsย to minimalistย birthstone necklacesย and earrings. Each birthstone is known for its unique properties and holds meaning beyond what meets the eye.ย

Below is a breakdown of the stone that matches the month you were born in. Embrace the beauty and significance of these gems as you wear your birthstone in style.ย

Garnet – January:ย The word garnet originates from the Latin word “Garnatus,” meaning seed-like because garnet gemstones are linked to pomegranate seeds. Garnet is a deep red stone that symbolizes friendship, loyalty, and trust. However, it can also be found in different colors.

Amethyst – February:ย
Amethyst is known as the โ€œJewel of the Gods,โ€ featuring shades of purple โ€” ranging from light lavender to violet. It is said to bring stability, balance to the mind, and courage.

Aquamarine – March:ย Aquamarine is the primary birthstone for March, known for its calming pale blue-green color. The name is derived from two Latin words: “Aqua” meaning water and “Marina” meaning sea. It is believed to create a sense of calmness.

Diamond – April:ย The name โ€œdiamondโ€ is derived from the Greek word “adamas,” which means unbreakable. The Greeks used it to describe objects that were so tough to break. Diamonds are known to be the most luxurious gemstone in the world, symbolizing everlasting love and commitment.ย

Emerald – May:ย Emerald is a rich green stone derived from the Greek word โ€œSmaragdus,โ€ which means green. It symbolizes growth and new beginnings.ย

Alexandrite – June:ย Alexandrite is sometimes referred to as “Emerald by day, Ruby by night” because it has the ability to change color under certain lighting conditions. It has been named after the future Tsar Alexander ll, the Emperor of Russia, King of Poland, and Grand Duke of Finland in 1855.

Ruby – July:ย The word โ€œRubyโ€ is derived from the Latin word โ€œRuber,โ€ which means red. The stone Ruby can come in different shades of red, but pure red is the most common. It symbolizes passion, love, and energy.ย

Peridot – August:ย Peridot is known for its bright green color, symbolizing strength and power, and stimulating happiness. It is believed to bring good luck and prosperity.

Sapphire – September:ย Sapphire is a bright deep blue stone. The root of its name comes from the Latin word “sapphirus” and the Greek word “sappheiros,” which were used to describe blue gemstones, which – at the time – was not the sapphire we know today. It symbolizes wisdom and royalty.ย

Opal – October:ย Opal is a multicolored stone that comes in a variety of colors. The name “Opal” was derived from the Sanskrit word โ€œUpalaโ€ which means precious gems. The stone symbolizes creativity and imagination. ย

Citrine – November:ย Citrine was named after the French word โ€œCitron,” which means lemon. It symbolizes strength and success. ย

Turquoise – December:ย Turquoise is a blue-green stone, with connections to the French language. It actually comes from the old French word “pierre turque,” which means “Turkish stone.” It symbolizes friendship and communication.
